Henri Matisse

GOATs | Creative Explorations in the Styles of Matisse

Where the Wild Beasts Paint.

Join us for a 2-hour hands-on GOATs (Greatest of All Time) painting workshop series exploring one of art’s greatest, Henri Matisse. During this Painterly class, we’ll dive into why Matisse is a household name and how he changed modern art through close examination of the art movement he pioneered called Fauvism (French for “wild beasts”); we’ll also throw in mention of some cutouts for good measure. We’ll then set you loose on a playful creative journey of your own to explore just how this master created his works. Example compositions will be provided to guide the process + stoke your imagination.

  • Well, try going to a museum without running into a Matisse.

Matisse is a household name because—along with Pablo Picasso—he developed techniques in the early 20th Century that shifted the direction of art as we know it today. Through the use of flattened form, decorative patterns, intense colorism, and cutouts, Matisse’s revolutionary approaches to art helped him earn a top spot in the canon of art history.
