Art Techniques | Contemporary Collage

A sum greater than its parts.

Join us for a 2-hour hands-on collage workshop exploring the technique of collage with an au courant approach. This Painterly class will guide you through the process of using various types of paper, graphics, paints, markers, and pastels to create your own papier collé work of art. Example compositions will be provided to guide the process + stoke your imagination.

  • Barely a century old, collage first came on the scene in the early 20th century France as Cubism emerged as a new artistic style. Papier collé comes from the French word “to glue or stick together” and thus became known to represent a work of art that was made by combining different materials—such as paper, photographs, fabric—in order to create a new image.

  • Probably everywhere. Collage is commonly found in art, magazine covers, album covers, advertisements, and more. Collage also emerged in the art practices of some really well-known artists, such as Georges Braque, Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Damien Hirst, and David Hockney.
