New Kids on the Block[print]

Art Mediums | Introduction to Woodblock Printing

What a relief!

Join us for a 2-hour hands-on block printing—also known as relief printing—workshop where we’ll combine the history + practice together as one. In this Painterly class, students will learn how to carve a design into a linoleum block and print the impression onto their very own canvas. Example compositions will be provided to guide the process + stoke your imagination.

  • Lots of reasons! We love block printing for its deep, historic roots—from Japanese ukiyo-e woodcuts to Indian textile printing to medieval European prints. And the process itself is incredibly meditative—from ideating to carving to printing—it’s a wonderfully tactile journey that produces unique + organic prints on virtually anything.

  • Many famous artists throughout time have experimented with block printing, including Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Katsushika Hokusai, Albrecht Dürer, Edvard Munch, and Elizabeth Catlett.
