Art Mediums | Introduction to Wet-on-Wet Watercolor Techniques

Water it down.

Join us for a 2-hour hands-on painting workshop exploring wet-on-wet watercolor techniques with an art history spin. This Painterly class will guide you through various common watercolor techniques used by artists to form a larger artistic composition—either concrete or abstract—depending on your personal preferences. Example compositions will be provided to guide the process + stoke your imagination.

  • Simple: it’s super cool . . . and fun. Unlike other mediums, watercolor requires complete control over pigments that are suspended in water. Movement of the brush, canvas, or solvents can change how the water and pigments behave, directly impacting the final work. For that reason, watercolor is often regarded as one of the most difficult art mediums to master. Good watercolorists know that the work they’re looking at while creating will appear dramatically different when dry, so watercolorists often plan for this “magical change” upfront, anticipating how the paint will change over time. Through the utilization of many layers of transparent color, unparalleled luminosity and light is created, which is often difficult to match through any other medium.

  • Many famous artists throughout time have used watercolor throughout their bodies of work. Some recognizable names include, Georgia O’Keefe, John Singer Sargent, Andrew Wyeth, Paul Klee, Wassily Kandinsky, Edward Hopper, and more.
