Color Me Curious
Art Foundations | Explorations in Use of Color
Life in full color.
Join us for a 2-hour hands-on painting workshop that introduces the basics of color theory which is a foundational skill taught in art school. In this class, we’ll learn about the color wheel, color mixing, and building a palette, which are all essential to making great art. We’ll then set out on a playful journey to create a colorful work of our own. Example compositions will be provided to guide the process + stoke your imagination.

The art foundation of color, or color theory, explores how colors interact, the emotional and visual effects of color combinations, and how to use hue, value, and saturation to create harmony, contrast, and depth in art. Colors are important for setting the mood and artists often use colors strategically to complement their works.

Pretty much everywhere. But think Tiffany Blue, Louboutin Red, UPS Brown . . . they’re all recognizable.
Artists use colors in the same way. For example:
Vincent van Gogh – Bold, vibrant yellows, blues, and oranges with high contrast
Claude Monet – Soft pastels and luminous colors to capture light and atmosphere
Pablo Picasso – Limited blue tones during his Blue Period, then warm pinks and earth tones in his Rose Period
Georgia O’Keeffe – Earthy reds, soft pinks, and desert-inspired neutrals
Mark Rothko – Deep, layered reds, oranges, purples, and blacks for emotional intensity
