La-Di-Dada

Art Movements | Contemporary Explorations in the Anti-Art Movements of Dada + Neo-Dada

Everything is art.

Join us for a 2-hour hands-on mixed media workshop exploring the anti-art movements of the early 20th century: Dada + Neo-Dada. In this Painterly, we’ll learn about the importance of these post-war art movements—and the influence they’ve had on contemporary art today ($6.2M banana taped to a wall, anyone?)—while also making our own Dada-inspired work. Example compositions will be provided to guide the process + stoke your imagination.

  • Great question. If you’re not an art history buff, you may never have heard of these important art movements but your perception of art has undoubtedly been influenced by them because, well, what Dada + Neo-Dada make clear is that anything can be art, from a urinal, to a wheel, to flag, and more. Where Dadaism rejected traditional artistic form and practice, Neo-Dadaism acted as a rejection of art altogether . . . while still making art.

  • Likely in art museums, a lot. Some well-known artists include Marcel Duchamp, Robert Rauschenberg, and Jasper Johns, best known for his iconic newspaper flags.
